• Bloom
  A natural waxy, easy-to-rub-off coating found on the skin of apples, plums, and some other fruits.
  
  
• Era when first planted
  The age of an apple tree can be a good guide to the likely variety.
  
  
• Russet
  A leathery, corky, slightly rough, netlike texture of the skin of apples and pears that can be greenish-brown, yellowish-brown, reddish-brown, tan, or gray.

  The stem attaches the apple to the tree. Stems are most useful in comparing apples.
